This is a work of “large-brush calligraphy,” which he can experience roughly twice a year. The instructor in large-brush calligraphy lets him write freely as he likes, instead of giving meticulous technical instruction, and praises him repeatedly. His answer to my question “What do you like to write?” was “Nagata,” which is his family name. “What? Nagata? It’s your family name, isn’t it? How about writing other cool-looking characters?” I said, but he answered, “... Nagata.” “... All right, so write it in Chinese characters,” I recommended to him, thinking that, since the Chinese character for “naga” is said to contain eight types of common strokes, it might be a good subject, but he insisted, “(I will write it in) hiragana!” ending up with my saying: “OK, I understand. You write it in hiragana.” This is how he began creating this work. Actually, he had two elder brothers, who were twins. One of them passed away inside his mother just before birth, and the other also passed away immediately after birth. I suppose that Yuma’s selection of “Nagata” as his subject shows that he, who would be our third son otherwise, is prepared to shoulder the Nagata family as its eldest son. The Nagata family is certainly united around him now. |
